A Wildlife Haven

Kangaroo Island is renowned for its rich diversity of native wildlife. Its koala population remains disease-free and the island is home to one of Australia’s rarest small marsupials, along with the highly endangered Glossy-black Cockatoo subspecies.

On 3 January 2020, catastrophic bushfires burned nearly half of the island, placing immense pressure on these species and many others. This gallery reflects both the resilience of the island’s wildlife and the fragility of the environments they depend on.
